The first thing we ask for is the date the premises have to be handed back, because everything else is planned around it. Task chairs are the other surprise. They do not stack, they do not come apart, and a hundred of them fills more space than the desks they sat at. A rough count of desks, chairs and cabinets is enough for us to come back with a figure that will still be the figure on the day.

Electrical kit does not travel in a general load. Monitors, machines, printers and the cabling behind them are electrical waste and have their own disposal route, so they come out separately and go to a site set up to take them. Fridges and anything with a cooling circuit are handled the same way.

Anything holding data is treated as yours until you say otherwise. Hard drives, server kit and boxes of paper records are set aside rather than tipped in with the rest, and you either keep them or we route them to a specialist for destruction, agreed before the day rather than assumed on it. We do not issue destruction certificates ourselves, and you should be wary of a clearance firm that offers one as an afterthought.

A good deal of office furniture is worth something to somebody. Decent desks, cabinets and chairs with life left in them go for reuse or to a local cause where we can place them, which keeps volume out of a skip and can take money off the job. What genuinely cannot be reused or recycled goes to a licensed waste site, and we can tell you where it went if you want that on file.

Clearance is priced on volume, the floor you are on, the access at the loading end and whether it has to happen outside trading hours. Business waste also carries a duty of care that stays with your company rather than transferring to whoever carts it off, which is exactly why the destination is worth asking about.
